What Is Human Givens Therapy?

About 20 years ago a group of psychologists and therapists set out to discover what works and what doesn’t in the wide and varied field of therapeutic models and diverse disciplines. They focused on what best helps relieve people from mental distress and especially those approaches that agreed with the emerging findings of neuroscience.

The result was a synthesis of everything that can reliably be said to help human beings function well and be happy. This synthesis became known as the “human givens” approach after the scientifically well-established 'givens' of human nature. It is an elegant and straightforward approach based on sound science and without the need for complicated models or opaque jargon.

The human givens approach to therapy has rapidly shown itself to be a fast, brief and extraordinarily effective way to improve the psychological state of people with problems; bringing down their emotional arousal, reframing and de-traumatising their past, re-connecting them with the resources they already have so that they can get on with life.

As knowledge of how human beings function continues to grow it is essential for therapists that they never stop learning. The human givens approach to therapy is an open and evolving concept. It is continually incorporating new knowledge and insights as they come to light enabling us to see more clearly what really works and why which makes HG therapists more effective at relieving distress.

The Human Givens approach is a holistic and scientific approach to helping you meet your emotional needs in healthy ways and harness your own resources in service of your mental well-being. It is easily tailored to your uniqueness as a person and your therapist will work alongside you to find the most effective solutions to your challenges.

The Human Givens Institute

The Human Givens Institute (HGI) was one of the six organisations in the UK (which included BACP, UKCP and NCS), involved in developing the Scope of Practice and Education (SCoPEd) Framework, which was officially adopted by them all in February 2023.

A ground-breaking shared standards framework, SCoPEd aims to transparently set out the core training, practice and competence requirements for counsellors and psychotherapists working with adults, to provide a nationally recognised framework of counselling and psychotherapy which helps to align PSA-accredited registers and bring clarity and credibility to the counselling and psychotherapy profession.

Human Givens therapy is regulated by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Organisations that recognise and use the Human Givens approach includes; The NHS, PSTD Resolution, Suffolk Mind.

Human Givens training has been independently assessed by the internationally recognised CPD Standards Office.
